The SFJ Story

“…Get Out Yer Seat and Shake It Contagious…” …is what the Colorado Blues Society said about the band’s first release, SOL~FED~JOE Live, in 2000.

Since that time, the band has performed hundreds of shows across the state of Colorado and in cities across the Midwest.  Playing countless smoky nightclubs virtually non-stop for years, these guys really have “paid their dues” – to use a common cliché.

Whether it’s an intimate venue or a large festival, SOL~FED~JOE has kept audiences sweating on dance floors and begging for more at each performance. They’ve been known to extend a typical three set show several hours – with a band record of over 7 hours on stage!  Mixing original material ranging from sultry, jazzy blues to soulful funk/r&b and rockabilly - and only the hippest, coolest non-cliché covers, they’ve developed a very authentic, yet uniquely fresh style that Denver fans have termed the Sol Fed sound.

Formed by Edwin Jeffreys and Troy Fox in Autumn 1999, over the years many of Denver ’s finest musicians have been part of SOL~FED~JOE.  Appearing as either a trim, four piece combo or a full band incorporating multiple vocalists, horns and keys, the band has built a strong reputation across Colorado for their passionate, high energy, soulful performances.

After a two year hiatus from performing, Troy and Edwin began to reform SOL~FED~JOE in early 2008. With renewed vigor and an exhaustive search, they rebuilt the entire band with a select group of seasoned musicians.  Not simply a collection of standout performers, each player’s talents and style fits hand in glove with the rest, resulting in a tight, cohesive, synergistic sound that both shakes your booty and heals your soul.

With nearly 150 combined years of professional performing experience, the new SOL~FED~JOE is poised to quickly regain and surpass their long held reputation as one of Colorado’s most exciting and unique high energy rhythm & blues groups.

So, let your heart sing, let your feet dance, let your hair down and dig the SOL~FED~JOE sound.

          The musicians:

~ Troy Fox ~

Troy Fox vocals and harmonica

Troy has fronted SOL~FED~JOE since the very first rehearsal in 1999.  He's known at all the hottest venues in town for his tremendous voice and soul drenched harmonica style.  His influences include Rufus Thomas, Sonny Terry, Junior Wells, Kim Wilson, and many others, yet Troy prides himself on forging his own style.  Just click on over to our music page for a healthy sampling of his talents.

~ Edwin Jeffreys ~

Edwin, originally from Chicago, grew up absorbing local blues acts such as Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, and other West Side heroes.  After more than fifteen years and well over 500 live performances across the state of Colorado with various blues based bands, he's developed a funky, soulful style rooted in the styles of the great r&b legends.  He's shared stages over the last few years with such notable guitar heroes as Tab Benoit and Hamilton Loomis.

~ Kerry Paige ~
Kerry Paige on saxophones
Kerry knocks us out at every performance with something new. A multi-instrumentalist, he's a true master at classic rhythm & blues saxophone along with a wide variety of jazz  styles.  He's performed at nearly every notable jazz event/festival in Colorado including Aspen/Snowmass Jazz, Breckenridge Jazz, Keystone Jazz, CC Jazz, Winter Park Jazz,  and more.  Whether it's baritone, tenor, alto, or even soprano saxophone, we're always watching in amazement as throngs of females swoon over his brilliant phrasing and improvisational mastery.

~ Brian McClure ~

Brian McClure on drums
After a really, really long search for THE drummer, we are very fortunate and proud to have Brian come into the band.  A well sought after drummer, he's performed with many well known Colorado bands over the years; currently performing with The Gretchen Troop band in addition to SFJ.  He's got sick chops, impeccable timing, and a traditional old school groove that really makes butts shake.

~ Cliff Rogers ~

Cliff Rogers on electric and upright bass

Well, sometimes life comes full circle.  We're happy to announce that long time SFJ bassist Cliff Rogers has re-joined the band after nearly an eight year absence.  During that time, he performed with such notable bands/artists as The Hip Shake, Theresa Lynn, and Dan Treanor.  He's got sick timing and a driving groove on both electric and upright bass.  We're happy to have him back with the band and look forward to a long future with him driving the rhythm section.

~ Moses ~

Moses on electric piano
After a two year absence performing with several other Denver area bands, Moses is back performing with SFJ.  A highly sought after musician, he's a monster player in the classic New Orleans R&B styles ala James Booker and Professor Longhair.

~ Bob Hetsko ~

Born in Ealing, UK, home to Alexis Koerner's Killing Floor - Bob was infused with the blues literally from birth.  His style is steeped in the sounds of the British blues based bands of the '60's.  Here in Denver, Bob has been laying it down for countless bands over the last 20+ years.  A multi-instrumentalist, Bob lists Willie Dixon, Bill Wyman, Keith Ferguson, and Berry Oakley as influences.

~ Stacy Cushing  ~

Stacy Cushing lead and backing vocals
Stacy has been a long time songwriting partner and friend of the band.  It was only a matter of time before we officially joined forces.  She's performed with many Colorado bands of various styles over the years including Tempa & The Tantrums and The Jezebel Project.  With her impeccable sense of harmony, Stacy has breathed new life into older SFJ repertoire while expanding the band's overall sound.
Don't miss the next show - you may never know who's part of the band!
